Teens love their music - this can be good or bad.  There are many groups and singers whose music does not make a positive contribution to our kids.  There are also many groups and singers who are committed to bringing glory to God and to having a positive effect on our kids lives.  Petra definitely fits the latter group.  I know there are many out there in Christian circles who believe Petra is not a group Christian kids should have anything to do with, but I would like to encourage you to look at several things about this group.

  • First, these men truly love and want to glorify God.  This is the primary message in their songs.   Look, really look at the words to their songs and you will see this is true.
  • Secondly, look at the results of their ministry . . . people turn to Christ and are challenged to live lives that glorify God!
  • Thirdly, these men are genuine - they are real and they live what they sing.
Favorite Features of this CD
  • lyrics are sound
  • message is clear
  • music is enthusiastic - shows some "spunk"
I highly recommend this CD for teens as it will encourage and challenge them in their Christian walk.  Extremely well done Petra and Word Records!

We are very happy to be able to bring you an interview with John Schlitt, lead singer for Petra and would like to thank John for taking the time to answer our questions and Jill Brothers from Word Records for her help in arranging this interview!

ATYD:  Why do you want to be a part of Petra?
JOHN:  Petra is a great vehicle to use the talents God had given me to tell the world about Jesus Christ.

ATYD:  What is the message of the new project, "God Fixation"?
JOHN:  Very simple.  Hebrews 12:2, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfector of our faith".

ATYD:  What do you do to keep your focus on Christ and glorifying God?
JOHN:  I stay in the Word, pray and listen to my wife!

ATYD:  What is your favorite song on the album?
JOHN:  I like them all.

ATYD:  What do you want people who go to your concerts or who listen to your music to come away with?
JOHN:  I want Christians to be encouraged in their walk with Jesus Christ and I want people who have never heard the Gospel message to hear it and their lives be changed forever as a result.

ATYD:  Why would you encourage kids to be involved in a solid youth group?
JOHN:  The core of your friends is a powerful influence.  That core can be self centered or God centered.  You make the choice.

ATYD:  Do you have any words of encouragement for youth workers?
JOHN:  What God has put on your heart is a mighty service.  Not everyone can do or should do it.  If you know God has called you to be involved in young people's lives, go for it!  There will be disappointments but there will also be great joy.  Your rewards will not only be on Earth but in Heaven as well!

ATYD:  Have you given any thought to writing a devotional to go with this album?
JOHN:  Bob Hartman has already written a devotional for "God Fixation".  It should be available in Christian bookstores. ("About the Youth Department" will review this devotional in the Fall issue due out in September - Lynda )

ATYD:  Do you believe your music is something parents should encourage their kids to listen to and why?
JOHN:  Yes, absolutely.  This music intentionally is geared to bring a positive life changing message.

I would like to encourage parents, youth leaders and teens to get a copy of "God Fixation" and really listen to it.  This album is extremely well done!  The message is solid and will encourage and challenge your walk with God  As a parent I have sincerely appreciated the integrity Petra shows in their music as I have watched it reinforce what my husband and I teach our son.  Our son listens to Petra literally every day and I appreciate the fact that when he listens to Petra he is also hearing the same message we have been teaching him throughout his life.  Thank you again John for giving us some of your time for this interview!
